The Big Bells of Pan-ay

A good fifteen to twenty minutes ride from Roxas City is the town of Pan-ay, formerly known as Bamban, which is famous for having the biggest church bell in the country.

The biggest church bell in the country.

We found ourselves in front of the Santa Monica Church and climbed the several flights of stairs found near the main door, all the way to the top of the belfry.

It is said that the townspeople donated around seventy sacks of coins for Juan Reina to cast the bell. There are around nine bells and the largest of them all measures seven feet in diameter and five feet in height, and weighs 10,400 kilograms. Such heavyweight.

The bells come in different sizes.
